Understanding Life Cycle Assessment in Construction

LCA measures a building's impact across its whole life. The useful version is scoped around a decision the team actually faces.

More than the energy bill

A building's impact is not only what is consumed while it is in use. Every material is manufactured, transported and installed, releasing carbon before occupation, and every material has an end of life. Life cycle assessment brings that whole picture into view.

Embodied carbon is rising in importance

As buildings become operationally efficient, the proportion of impact tied to materials and construction grows. In the Gulf, where construction is material-intensive, embodied carbon is a significant and rising share of a building's total emissions.

LCA as a decision tool

The most useful LCA is comparative: does this design or material perform better, and where does the impact come from? Framed that way, an LCA helps choose between alternatives and supports certification and client carbon reporting, rather than producing a number nobody can act on.
