Sustainability Documentation: What Project Teams Need to Prepare

Certification is a documentation discipline. Here is the trail a project needs to build from concept to evidence.

The documentation is the certification

A green-building rating is claimed in calculations and reports and proven in evidence. The documentation a project needs runs from sustainability strategy and environmental objectives at concept, through calculators, specifications, studies and reports at design, to the material submittals, site records and audit evidence of construction.

Own the trail from the start

Documentation built continuously is cheap. Documentation recovered at the end is expensive and fragile, because evidence collected after the fact is harder to substantiate. A project should know from day one which documents, sign-offs and records each target will need.

Who prepares what

Specialist consultants prepare much of the technical content, but the trail is a team effort: architects and engineers provide design basis, contractors provide material and site evidence, and a sustainability coordinator keeps it consistent, complete and traceable to the rating being claimed.
