A performance brief, not an afterthought
A consultant's first job is to give the design team a clear performance brief: which targets, on what categories, with what evidence. That removes guesswork and lets architects and engineers design to a defined goal rather than discover requirements late.

Design review with a purpose
Support is most valuable in the design reviews where decisions are made: orientation and massing, envelope and glazing, shading, daylight, material specification and the interfaces with MEP systems. The consultant asks the questions that move performance and flags issues while they are cheap to fix.
The documentation that proves it
Alongside design, the consultant builds the calculations, studies, reports and specifications that certification requires. This runs in parallel with the design process, so the evidence is complete when the design is complete.
